What to Do After GBP Reinstatement: Post-Recovery Best Practices

The profile is back. The instinct now is to open it and put everything right, the hours that drifted, the photos you never uploaded, the category you always meant to change.

That instinct is the problem.

In our case data around 55% of suspensions trace to excessive editing, too many saves in one session across the name, address, phone, URL and category fields. A freshly reinstated profile, edited enthusiastically by a relieved owner, is close to a textbook trigger for exactly that.

The first two weeks are about restraint, not optimisation.

First, confirm it is actually back

A reinstatement email is not proof of visibility. Check properly before you assume anything:

Search your exact business name in an incognito window on a device that is not signed into your account. Then search the category and location you care about. Check the profile appears on Maps, that reviews are attached and visible, that the dashboard lets you edit, and that your phone number and website links work from the live listing.

If the listing is still missing after a day or two, that is worth chasing straight away rather than waiting.

Then do nothing for a fortnight

Genuinely nothing on the five sensitive fields. No name tidy-up, no category change, no address reformatting, no phone or URL updates.

If something is factually wrong and actively costing you, for example the hours are incorrect and customers are arriving at a closed door, fix that one thing and leave everything else. One change, then stop.

Photos, posts and replying to reviews are all fine. They are not what gets profiles suspended.

Save the paperwork while it is fresh

You will not remember the detail in six months, and if there is ever a second suspension this file is what makes it quick to diagnose.

Keep the reinstatement confirmation email, the case ID Google issued, whatever you submitted with the appeal, screenshots of the profile as it stands now, and a short note of what the original cause turned out to be.

That last item matters most. The cause is the thing you are now managing around.

Fix the actual cause, everywhere

Reinstatement clears the penalty. It does not fix what caused it.

If the trigger was a keyword-stuffed name, the keywords need to be gone from the website footer, the invoice templates and the directory listings too, not only from the profile. Google measures the profile against everything else it can see, and a name that matches in one place and not others is the same inconsistency that got flagged the first time.

Google’s standard is that the business is represented “as it’s consistently represented and recognized in the real world across signage, stationery, and other branding.” (Guidelines for representing your business on Google)

Consistency is the whole job, and now is when you have the motivation to do it properly.

Lock down who can touch it

A share of the account-level cases we handle involve profiles that have passed through several agencies or staff members, where nobody is certain who still has access.

Keep primary ownership on an account the business controls. Give managers manager access, not ownership. Remove people when they leave. If an agency handled the reinstatement, decide deliberately whether they keep standing access afterwards.

Also worth knowing: Google can apply user-suggested edits without asking you. Checking the profile periodically is not paranoia, it is how you catch a change you did not make.

A rhythm after the first month

Once the fortnight has passed and the profile is stable, normal activity resumes. Post, add photos, reply to reviews, keep hours current around holidays.

Monthly, read the five sensitive fields against your documents and confirm nothing has drifted. Quarterly, re-scan your registration and a recent utility bill so your evidence never goes stale, and check the major directories still agree with the profile.

Before any significant change from here on: prepare the document, update everywhere else, edit the profile last, one field at a time.

If it happens again

A second suspension on the same profile is harder work than the first, largely because the account now has history.

The repeat suspensions we handle are almost always profiles where the original cause was corrected on the listing but nowhere else, leaving the underlying inconsistency sitting there waiting to be found again.

If you are not certain what caused yours, or whether the fix went far enough, a free audit will tell you what is still exposed.
